Steve Rocci has been practicing patent, trademark and copyright law since 1981 and concentrates his practice in patent litigation, licensing and client counseling. Steve has been a member of the firm’s Policy Committee since 2000, and presently serves as its chairperson.

Steve has litigated patent cases in such subject matter areas as business methods, database technologies, electronic circuitry, internet technologies, and web site architecture and functionality. He has also litigated patent, trademark, and copyright cases involving consumer products and building designs. His litigation experience involves successfully trying cases to both juries and the bench, arguing appeals to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and representing clients in arbitration proceedings. Steve has also been appointed to the American Arbitration Association’s panel of neutrals for disputes relating to intellectual property.

His counseling practice involves advising clients in areas such as freedom to operate, licensing, and complex patent prosecution matters, including reissue and reexamination proceedings, and strategic use of intellectual property. Before becoming an attorney, Steve worked as an engineer.

Accolades from Steve’s clients includes comments such as: “Steve is one of those rare individuals who is exceptionally smart but is able to explain complicated patent issues and technology in terms that a lay person can understand.”; “It was your great skill as a patent lawyer that held it together and got us where we need to be.”; and, “He quickly grasps how the issue impacts the business and has good judgment on how to solve the problem both from a legal and a business perspective.” One of Steve’s opponents has commented that “Steve fought hard and aggressively for his client and obtained a good settlement for his client partially based on our desire to eliminate Steve’s leadership from the defense team.”

Steve believes that lawyers should serve the communities in which they practice. To this end, Steve served as an Adjunct Professor of Patent Law and Patent Litigation at Temple University School of Law from 1989 to 2007, and also at Drexel University School of Law since 2006, where he has been bestowed with the title of Distinguished Practice Professor of Intellectual Property Law. Steve is a host parent of A Better Chance Scholar, an organization that provides access to high quality education for motivated minority students from urban areas. He is also active in pro-bono matters, representing causes, as well as indigent individuals and government entities.

In recognition of his accomplishments, Steve has been listed in the Chambers USA Guide to America’s Leading Business Lawyers, The Best Lawyers in America, and The Legal 500 (United States – patent litigation), and has been voted by his peers as one of Pennsylvania’s Super Lawyers in the field of intellectual property.

Steve is a member of the American Bar Association, the Philadelphia Bar Association, the International Trademark Association, and the Philadelphia Intellectual Property Law Association.
